Day Trips

Zongo Falls -- About 130 km from Kinshasa along the Congo River road, Zongo Falls is the most popular excursion from the capital. The waterfall drops roughly 60 meters through lush forest, and the setting is genuinely beautiful. The drive takes you through small villages along the river, which is half the pleasure. Hire a car with a driver for the day -- the road is rough in places but passable in the dry season. Bring food and water, as there are no reliable facilities at the falls.

Ma Vallee -- A small lake surrounded by equatorial forest, about an hour from the city center. Kinshasa's residents come here for picnics and a break from the heat and noise. It is a quiet spot with some birdwatching opportunities and a chance to see greenery after days of concrete. Nothing spectacular, but a pleasant escape.

Brazzaville -- The capital of Congo Republic is a 20-minute ferry ride across the river and makes for an interesting contrast. Brazzaville is smaller, calmer, and more walkable than Kinshasa. You will need a visa for Congo-Brazzaville arranged in advance. The ferry operates daily from the port at Ngobila Beach, though the formalities on both sides can take hours.
