Matonge

Kinshasa's cultural heart, where live rumba and ndombolo pour from the bars every weekend night

Matonge is where Kinshasa's famous music scene lives and breathes. Named -- unusually -- after the neighbourhood in Brussels where Congolese immigrants settled in the 1960s and 1970s, the original Matonge is a dense residential quarter that comes alive at night with live rumba, ndombolo, and the newer sounds that have grown from them. This is where musicians gather, where the best bands play, and where you can hear in person the music that gave Congo its biggest cultural export.

During the day the neighbourhood is a tangle of small shops, hair salons, and street food vendors. After dark, bars fill with people and sound spills onto the street. Go with a local guide who knows the area and the venues -- navigating Matonge alone at night is not advisable, and the best spots change. But experiencing live Congolese music in the neighbourhood that produced it is one of the most memorable things you can do in this city.
