The Stade des Martyrs -- full name Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecôte -- is the national stadium of the DRC and one of the largest in Africa, with a capacity of around 80,000. It hosts international football matches and major events, and on match days the atmosphere is extraordinary: drums, singing, and the collective energy of a city that takes its football extremely seriously. Congo's national team, the Leopards, commands enormous popular loyalty.
The stadium takes its name from Christian martyrs killed in the early colonial period. It is located in the Lingwala commune, a short drive from the Gombe district. Even if you don't catch a match, driving past on a game day gives you a sense of how sport functions as one of the city's main shared rituals. If you do manage to get a ticket -- check with your hotel for upcoming fixtures -- go early and go with a local.
