Shunet El Zebib

Huge early dynastic mudbrick enclosure, one of the oldest standing royal monuments in Egypt.

Shunet El Zebib is a vast mudbrick funerary enclosure from the earliest dynasties of ancient Egypt. It is less polished than the Temple of Seti I, but in some ways more startling: a raw, ancient rectangle of walls standing in the desert after more than 4,000 years.

It is best appreciated with a guide who can explain the early royal cemetery around it. Without context it can look like a ruined fort; with context it becomes one of the stepping stones toward Egypt's later pyramid complexes.

A story
Shunet El Zebib predates the pyramids and was built for Khasekhemwy, the last king of Egypt's Second Dynasty. Its massive mudbrick walls show how royal monumentality was developing before Egypt learned to express it in stone pyramids.
