Gerf Hussein

Reassembled Nubian temple fragments from a Ramesses II shrine saved from Lake Nasser

Gerf Hussein is one of the quieter rescued monuments at New Kalabsha, the island site south of Aswan where several Nubian temples were moved during the creation of Lake Nasser. The original temple was built for Ramesses II by Setau, Viceroy of Kush, and dedicated to Ptah, Hathor, and the deified king.

Only part of the temple survived the rescue campaign. The free-standing forecourt was dismantled and rebuilt here, while the rock-cut section was left behind and now lies under the lake. That gives the site a slightly fragmentary feel, but it also makes the story vivid: New Kalabsha is not a single monument, but a collection of salvaged pieces from a drowned landscape.
