Unfinished Obelisk

The Unfinished Obelisk lies in the ancient granite quarries north of Aswan, exactly where it was abandoned by the ancient Egyptians roughly 3,500 years ago. Still attached to the bedrock on three sides, it is the largest known ancient obelisk and gives the clearest possible picture of how these monumental blocks were cut from living rock. The marks of the dolerite balls used to pound the granite are still visible across the surface.

A crack appeared in the granite before the obelisk could be detached, and the quarry was abandoned. In the same quarry complex, smaller works in various stages of completion are visible in the rock face. The site provides a fascinating counterpoint to the finished temples and monuments elsewhere in Egypt — here you see the raw labor, the tools, the process, and the moment of failure preserved in stone. The quarry is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A story
At 42 metres long and weighing an estimated 1,200 tonnes, this would have been the largest obelisk ever erected. It was abandoned when a crack appeared in the granite during carving — a catastrophic failure that preserved the quarrymen's tools, marks, and half-finished work for 3,500 years. Had it been completed and stood upright, it would have dwarfed every other obelisk in Egypt.
