Founded in 1957, Assiut University is the largest university in Upper Egypt and the third-oldest in the country. Its sprawling campus on the west side of town is what gives Asyut its student population — visible in the cafes around the main gates — and the medical school is one of the best regarded in Egypt.
There's nothing to "see" in the tourist sense, but a walk through the campus gives a sense of provincial Egyptian student life that few visitors get to witness.
