Asyut isn't built for tourism, but a handful of sites reward a stop. The Coptic monasteries on the hills above town are the main draw — Deir el-Muharraq and the cliff-side monastery of Durunka. In town, the Alexan Pasha Palace and the Nile barrage are worth a look.
