The Dendera Light reliefs are a series of carvings in the subterranean crypts of the Temple of Hathor that have attracted extraordinary popular attention because some observers believe they depict light bulbs. The images show serpents emerging from lotus flowers inside elongated oval forms, which to some 20th-century writers resembled electrical discharge tubes.
Egyptologists interpret these as standard religious imagery: the serpent represents divine power, the lotus is a symbol of creation, and the oval form is a conventional Egyptian representation of a womb or primordial vessel. The crypts are genuinely worth visiting regardless of the controversy — they contain some of the best-preserved painted reliefs in the temple, and the subterranean spaces give a real sense of the layered religious function of the complex.
