The sacred lake of the Hathor temple sits within the outer enclosure walls, a large rectangular basin cut from the rock and lined with stone. In the temple's active period it served ritual purposes — purification, festival processions, and the symbolic representation of the primordial ocean from which creation emerged in Egyptian cosmology.
The lake is dry today, but the stairways descending to the water level on multiple sides are intact. Walking around the lake gives a good sense of the scale of the entire temple precinct, including the high mud-brick enclosure walls that surrounded the whole complex.
