Cairo University Area

The university district around Cairo University for cheap Egyptian food

The area around Cairo University in northern Giza is where you eat if you want genuine Egyptian food at genuine Egyptian prices. The neighbourhood is dense with street stalls, foul and ta'amiya (falafel) shops, grilled corn vendors, and simple restaurants catering to students and local families rather than tourists. No one here is pricing for foreign visitors.

The staples are reliable: foul medames (slow-cooked fava beans) for breakfast, ta'amiya in fresh flatbread, grilled pigeon and quail in the evenings, and kofta from charcoal braziers on the street. There is no single restaurant to seek out — wander and follow your nose. The area is busiest in the evenings when students finish classes and families come out after the heat of the day. The walk from the Giza Metro station drops you into the heart of it.
