Pyramids Road (Sharia al-Ahram)

The strip of restaurants and cafes along Sharia al-Ahram running toward the pyramids

Sharia al-Ahram — Pyramids Road — runs from the edge of Cairo's main grid west toward the Giza Plateau, and its commercial strip is lined with restaurants of every type and price level. This is where the hotels, tour operators, and local Cairenes who come to the area for the pyramids end up eating. Quality ranges from excellent to forgettable; the best strategy is to walk a few blocks, check what looks busy with local customers rather than foreign tourists, and sit down.

The road gets busier in the evenings when the Sound and Light Show brings crowds to the plateau. Several decent fish restaurants occupy the middle section of the strip. The area closer to the plateau has the most tourist-oriented cafes with pyramid views from their upper terraces; walk further east for better prices and more Cairene character.
