The point where the Suez Canal meets the Red Sea is one of the more unusual spectacles in travel: massive container ships, supertankers, and bulk carriers crawling through a desert landscape as if the sea has somehow extended its reach into the sand. From the waterfront near Suez Port, you can watch these convoys pass at close range — the scale of the vessels against the flat desert is genuinely astonishing.
The best viewing is from the Port Tewfik (Port Taufiq) area at the southern entrance to the canal. Ships pass in convoy, usually in the morning or afternoon, and the process of watching an enormous supertanker edge its way through a channel barely wider than the ship itself is memorable. No admission or permission is required; this is a public waterfront.
