Black Beach Prison

Black Beach Prison, set on a promontory above the sea on the northern edge of the city, is one of Africa's most notorious detention facilities. It held political prisoners throughout the Macías dictatorship (1968–1979) and has continued to be used for political detainees under the current government of Teodoro Obiang Nguema, in power since 1979.

The prison is not open to visitors and should not be approached closely. It is mentioned here because its presence is an inescapable part of understanding Malabo's political reality. Equatorial Guinea has one of the worst human rights records in Africa, and the prison's location — visible from the harbour — is a deliberate signal.

A story
In 2004, a group of mercenaries led by Simon Mann attempted to use Malabo as a staging post for a coup against the government of Teodoro Obiang Nguema. The plot — which involved Mark Thatcher and was bankrolled by various international investors — collapsed when the chartered plane was intercepted in Zimbabwe. Mann and others ended up in Black Beach, where Mann later described conditions of severe deprivation before his eventual release.
