A handsome Italian-built station on the western side of the city centre, dating from the 1930s. The facade is symmetrical and restrained, with arched windows and a clock above the main entrance; the platforms behind still hold a small fleet of Italian narrow-gauge steam locomotives, lovingly maintained by the Eritrean railwaymen who pulled them out of wartime storage.
Even when no train is running, the station can usually be entered and the locomotives admired. The signal house and small museum of railway tools next door are often open if you knock and explain you have come to see the trains.
