The centre of Asmara is small and walkable — almost all the architectural highlights and the main markets are within twenty minutes of Liberation Avenue. Walking is also the most pleasant way to experience the city's daily rhythm, especially during the early evening promenade.
For longer distances there are shared minibuses (cost a few nakfa) and a fleet of yellow Fiat 1100 and 600 taxis dating from the 1960s. Taxis can be flagged in the street or picked up at ranks near the cathedral. Negotiate the fare before getting in; rides within the city centre run a few US dollars.
Bicycles are the third option. Asmara is famously a cycling town — the country has a strong road-racing tradition — and the wide streets, low traffic, and gentle hills make for easy riding. A few hotels and tour operators rent bikes by the day.
