One of the classic 1930s cafés on Liberation Avenue, with a curved Art Deco facade, a chrome counter, and the kind of espresso machine that has not been redesigned since the war. The macchiato is excellent and costs almost nothing; the pastries, especially the bombolini and almond biscotti, are made on the premises every morning.
The terrace tables on the avenue fill up by five in the afternoon. Inside, the original mirrors and lights still work. There is no better place to spend an unstructured hour in central Asmara.
