Bar Zilli

A small Rationalist-Futurist building in central Asmara, originally a bar and shop opened in the late 1930s. The streamlined facade with its curved corner window and horizontal banding is a textbook example of how the colonial architects translated Italian design into the African capital.

Bar Zilli is still a working café and is a good stop for a quick macchiato or a cold beer while walking the modernist heritage circuit. Inside, much of the original counter and stools survives.
