Casa degli Italiani

The Italian Cultural Centre's restaurant and bar, in a fine old villa on Liberation Avenue. The kitchen turns out classic Italian dishes — handmade gnocchi, osso buco, vitello tonnato — in a more elegant setting than most places in town. The garden terrace, shaded by jacaranda, is one of the most pleasant places in Asmara to have lunch.

The bar is open to non-members and serves espresso and Italian wines. The community itself is tiny now — perhaps a few hundred Italian-Eritreans — but the institution still functions and is open to outside visitors.
