Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

Built in the early 1920s for the Italian community of Asmara, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary stands on a quiet residential street a few blocks east of Liberation Avenue. The exterior is restrained — pale stuccoed walls, a narrow bell tower — but the interior is one of the prettiest small church interiors in the city, with a coffered wooden ceiling and a series of side chapels.

The church is generally open in the morning for Mass and again in the late afternoon. A nearby Italian school and a small cemetery preserve a few other reminders of the once large Italian community in the quarter.
