Asmara Central Post Office

A handsome 1916 building just off Liberation Avenue, the central post office is one of the earliest examples of Italian neoclassical architecture in the city. The facade is dressed in pale stone with a deep arcaded loggia at street level and a clock above the central pediment.

Inside, the original wooden counters and brass fittings survive almost intact — the post office is one of the few places in Asmara where you can still buy stamps over a counter that has not changed for a century. The philatelic counter usually has Eritrean stamps for sale at face value.
