Gaet'ale Pond

Gaet'ale Pond is a small hypersaline pool near Dallol, more curiosity than grand vista but memorable precisely because it is so strange. The water is dense with dissolved salts and minerals, and the surrounding crust can be brittle underfoot.

It is a stop for travellers already exploring the Dallol area, not a destination to chase on its own. Keep back from the edge unless your guide says otherwise. The Danakil's small features can be every bit as dangerous as its big ones.

A story
Gaet'ale Pond is often cited as one of the saltiest natural bodies of water on earth. Its oily-looking surface and sharp mineral edge are a reminder that the Danakil is not just hot; it is chemically extreme.
