Salt Canyons

Wind-carved salt formations in the Danakil's otherworldly Dallol landscape

The salt canyons of the Danakil Depression are part of the same harsh mineral landscape that makes Dallol look almost unreal. Wind, heat, and evaporating brines carve salt into ridges, slots, crusts, and chalky walls, with colours shifting from white and ochre to sulphur yellow where geothermal deposits stain the ground.

This is not a casual roadside sight. Conditions are severe, access depends on local security and guides, and the heat can be punishing even by desert standards. With a competent operator, though, the salt formations are one of the clearest ways to understand why the Danakil feels less like a normal desert than an exposed geological engine.
