Dallol is the Danakil's most famous spectacle: a surreal field of acidic springs, salt formations, gas vents, and mineral crusts near the Ethiopian side of the depression. It is not a geyser basin in the gentle national-park sense. The ground is fragile, the pools are corrosive, and the air can feel as though it has been cooked before it reaches you.
Most visits are arranged from Ethiopia rather than Eritrea, but Dallol defines the mental image of the whole depression. If you do reach it, go with guides who know where the safe paths are. The place is astonishing, but it is not forgiving.
