Haile Selassie Palace Viewpoint

Hilltop viewpoint by Haile Selassie's former palace, overlooking Bahir Dar and Lake Tana

The former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie stands on Bezawit Hill above Bahir Dar. The building itself is not normally open to casual visitors, but the hilltop is the point: from here you get one of the best broad views over Lake Tana, the Blue Nile outlet, and the low, green shape of the city.

Come for the panorama rather than palace interiors. Early morning and late afternoon are best, when the lake has more colour and the heat is easier. A taxi can take you up, though some travellers combine it with a longer walk if they have time and a guide.
