Tana Qirqos

Tana Qirqos is one of Lake Tana's more storied island monasteries, set farther from Bahir Dar than the quick Zege Peninsula stops. It is associated with deep Ethiopian Orthodox traditions and with legends that link the lake to Axum.

Reaching it usually means a longer boat trip, so it suits travellers who want a full day on the lake rather than a quick monastery sample. Check access rules before you go; some Lake Tana monasteries restrict entry.

A story
Local tradition says the Ark of the Covenant was once kept at Tana Qirqos before being taken to Axum. Whether you accept the story or not, it explains the island's powerful place in Ethiopian Orthodox memory.
