The Omo River offers one of Africa's classic wilderness river expeditions. The rafting season runs from October to January, after the rains have dropped enough to make the river navigable but while it still runs powerfully. The upper Omo gorge, cutting through Omo National Park in Ethiopia's Southern Nations region, is the most spectacular section — a deep sandstone canyon with Class III-IV rapids, prolific birdlife, and populations of hippopotamus and crocodile that make the swim-or-walk approach to rapids a more serious calculation than usual.
The full expedition from the Ethiopian Highlands to Lake Turkana on the Kenyan border takes two to three weeks and requires a specialist operator. This is not a casual adventure: logistics are complex, the remoteness is genuine, and the Omo crocodiles are among the largest on the continent. Several international operators run the river in season; the Ethiopia Tourism Organisation in Addis Ababa can provide current information on licensed outfitters.
