Things to Do

The Simien Mountains are a hiking and wildlife destination above all else. The main escarpment trail from Debark connects Sankaber, Geech, and Chennek camps over three to four days of walking, with spectacular gorge views and gelada baboon encounters throughout. From Chennek, fit trekkers can ascend Ras Dashen — Ethiopia's highest peak — or the more accessible Mount Bwahit.

Wildlife watching is the other main draw. Geladas are easily seen in large numbers. Walia ibex are best viewed at Chennek on the steep escarpment faces. Ethiopian wolves are occasionally seen hunting in the high moorland. Lammergeiers soar along the escarpment walls throughout the day.

All treks require a licensed guide and armed scout, arranged through the park office in Debark.
