Albreda, just over a kilometre from Juffure along the river bank, was the French counterpart to the British fort on James Island. Today it is a small Mandinka and Wolof fishing village much like its neighbour. The old French trading factory, the slavery museum, and the boat pier are all in Albreda; most organised tours start here.
A short walk along the riverbank between the two villages takes about twenty minutes and gives a sense of the landscape — flat tidal mangroves, fishing pirogues drawn up on the beach, and the wide brown river running out to the Atlantic. The Freedom Flagpole and a small monument to the abolition of slavery stand near the pier.
