The National Museum of Albreda and Juffure, in the neighbouring village of Albreda about a kilometre from Juffure, is housed in the restored Maurel Frères building — an old French trading post from the late 18th century. The exhibits cover the history of the Atlantic slave trade in the Gambia, the Mandinka kingdoms that controlled the river before Europeans arrived, and the village's connection to Alex Haley's research.
The displays are simple but informative. A typical visit takes thirty to forty-five minutes and is essential for understanding what you will see in Juffure and on Kunta Kinteh Island. The museum is the starting point for the official tours run by the Gambian National Centre for Arts and Culture.
