Kokrobite Beach

Kokrobite beach is wide, sandy, and significantly cleaner than the beaches closer to Accra. The Atlantic surf can be strong — riptides form along the beach, particularly near the channel mouths, and several drownings have occurred. Swim parallel to shore if you get caught in a rip, not against it. The safe swimming areas are marked informally by local knowledge; ask before going in if you're unsure.

Outside the water, the beach is pleasant: hawkers sell cold drinks and grilled corn, fishing boats are hauled up above the tide line, and the palms behind the beach provide afternoon shade. Mornings are best — before the sun gets intense and before the weekend crowds from Accra arrive. Sunsets over the ocean are reliably good.

A story
The coastal strip west of Accra was historically the domain of the Ga fishing community, and Kokrobite's fishing boats are still built and maintained on the same beach where visitors sunbathe. The distinctive Ga canoes — long, brightly painted wooden vessels with names in the local language painted on the sides — are launched through the surf early in the morning by teams of fishermen working together. It's worth getting up at dawn to watch.
