Big Milly's Backyard

Big Milly's Backyard is the social centre of Kokrobite — a sprawling beach compound with simple rooms, a bar, a restaurant, and an open-air area that stays lively well into the night. The bar runs on cold beer, cocktails, and whatever the kitchen is cooking that day. Friday and Saturday nights draw people from Accra; midweek it's quieter and more relaxed.

The food is honest: grilled fish, rice dishes, occasional barbecue. The real reason people come is the atmosphere — fires on the beach, rotating groups of travellers, live drumming from AAMA drifting over on weekends. Simple rooms and camping are available if you want to stay. The combination of beach access, social energy, and the drumming school next door makes this the obvious base for a Kokrobite stay.

A story
Big Milly's was started by a British woman named Milly who arrived in Ghana in the 1990s and never left. What began as a handful of bamboo rooms on the beach became the best-known backpacker compound on the Ghanaian coast, drawing a mix of long-term travellers, Accra weekenders, and volunteers from around West Africa. The fire pit has seen many long conversations under many stars.
