Reaching Nzulezu requires a canoe journey of about 5km from the small town of Beyin, starting from the canoe landing at the edge of town. Guides and canoes are arranged through the community tourism office in Beyin; the trip takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way, depending on water levels and the number of paddlers.
The passage runs through channels in the papyrus swamp and along the fringes of lowland rainforest. Water birds — herons, egrets, kingfishers, jacanas — are common throughout the journey, and the vegetation creates a dense green tunnel effect in the narrower channels. The canoe is a traditional dugout, sometimes motorised; experienced guides navigate the maze of channels without apparent effort. The return journey at different times of day has different light and different birdlife, making it worth the extra hour.
