Kintampo Waterfalls

Two-tiered waterfall in forest, a popular day trip from Sunyani

The Kintampo Waterfalls lie about 90km north of Sunyani, near the town of Kintampo in the Bono East Region. The most visited is the Fuller Falls, where water drops over a rocky escarpment into a pool surrounded by forest. There is a small picnic area and basic facilities at the site. The pool at the base of the falls is pleasant for swimming in the dry season when water levels are lower and visibility better.

The falls are reachable by shared taxis and tro-tros from Sunyani via Kintampo. Allow a full day for the round trip. The town of Kintampo itself has a few guesthouses and is the starting point for visiting the Kintampo Waterfalls Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected forest reserve adjacent to the falls. The area is particularly scenic in the wet season, though the water can be murky and swimming is less advisable.

A story
The Kintampo Waterfalls sit almost exactly at the geographical centre of Ghana, a fact that is noted by the signage at the site. The falls — actually two separate cascades, the upper and lower Fuller Falls — were named after Francis Fuller, the first British Resident Commissioner of Ashanti, who visited in 1901. They are set in a forested gorge, and the pools at their bases are popular for swimming. The journey north from Sunyani passes through some of the most fertile agricultural land in Ghana, with yam mounds, cocoa farms, and forest patches.
