Sunyani

Bono Region capital in central Ghana, with a compact market centre and useful day-trip access.

Sunyani is the capital of the Bono Region (formerly Brong Ahafo) in central Ghana, a quiet, clean city that sits between Kumasi and the border with Ivory Coast. It is not a tourist destination in itself, but it is a pleasant place to stop and a good base for some excellent day trips in the surrounding area.

The town centre is small and walkable, built around a colourful central market worth wandering through. The most striking building is the Roman Catholic Cathedral, a bold modern interpretation of a church that stands out among the more modest architecture. The Sunyani Central Mosque is another prominent landmark. The overall feel is relaxed and friendly — Sunyani regularly wins awards as one of the cleanest cities in Ghana.

The real reason to come here is what lies within easy reach. The Kintampo Waterfalls are a straightforward day trip north, and the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary — where black-and-white colobus and mona monkeys roam freely through a village that considers them sacred — is one of the more memorable wildlife encounters in Ghana. The town of Berekum, just to the west, has a public swimming pool if you need to cool off.

Getting Around

Sunyani's town centre is compact enough to walk around comfortably. When you need a taxi, you have two options common across Ghana: a "dropping" (shared taxi following a set route, very cheap) or a "chartered" taxi where you hire the vehicle for yourself and tell the driver where to go. Chartered taxis cost more but are still inexpensive by international standards. Agree on the fare before you get in.

Getting There

Sunyani is about 300km northwest of Accra, roughly 5 to 6 hours by road. Shared taxis and STC buses run regularly from Accra's Neoplan Station and from Kumasi (about 2 hours away). From Kumasi, tro-tros depart from the Kejetia terminal throughout the day. The road from Kumasi is paved and generally in good condition.

There is no rail connection to Sunyani. There is a small regional airport but scheduled commercial services are intermittent — check current availability before planning to fly.
