Birdwatching

The Bijagos archipelago is internationally recognised as an Important Bird Area, and serious birdwatchers come specifically for the diversity and volume of species. The mangrove channels hold herons, egrets, kingfishers, and jacanas. The tidal flats and beaches are good for shorebirds, including globally threatened species such as the African oystercatcher. Offshore waters attract pelicans, terns, and frigatebirds.

A knowledgeable local guide is essential — both for navigating the channels by pirogue and for finding species in the dense vegetation. Several small eco-lodges on Rubane and Bubaque can arrange birdwatching excursions. The best months are November to April, when both resident species and Palearctic winter migrants are present. Bring good binoculars and rubber boots for mangrove walks.

A story
The Bijagos lie on the East Atlantic Flyway, one of the world's major migratory bird routes connecting Europe and West Africa. At peak migration times in autumn and spring, the mangroves and tidal flats hold extraordinary concentrations of waders, including species that have flown from Siberia or from Arctic Canada. The islands are one of the most important shorebird staging grounds in the entire flyway.
