Conakry Botanical Garden

Colonial-era botanical garden, a green pocket in central Conakry

The Conakry Botanical Garden, in the Camayenne district, was established by the French colonial administration in the 1890s as a research garden for tropical plants — many of the species they were trying to commercialise across French West Africa were first acclimatised here. The garden has fallen in and out of upkeep many times, and what remains today is a quiet, slightly overgrown park rather than a manicured collection.

It is one of the few peaceful green spaces in central Conakry. Tall ficus and mahogany shade the paths, and there is a small lake with herons. Families come on Sunday afternoons; couples come at dusk. Pay the small entrance fee at the gate and walk slowly — the labelling is patchy but several of the older trees are tagged with century-old metal plaques in faded French.
