Palais de l'OUA

Grand complex built for a summit that never happened

A large complex built in anticipation of a 1984 OAU summit that was never held. The main building and the row of Moorish-style guesthouses alongside it are a curious legacy of Sékou Touré's final years. Worth seeing as a piece of the city's strange political history, even if access to the interior is limited.

A story
The Palais was built for an Organisation of African Unity summit in 1984, along with fifty Moorish-style villas for visiting heads of state. President Sékou Touré died before the summit could take place, and the buildings stood largely unused for years — an elaborate complex constructed for a meeting that never happened.
