Monogaga is a coastal area about 10km east of San-Pédro's centre, where a classified forest meets the Atlantic. The beach here is backed by forest rather than development, giving it a more natural character than the beaches directly adjacent to the city. A lagoon system runs parallel to the shore, separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of sand, and local fishermen work the still waters in dugout canoes.
The Monogaga Classified Forest covers around 350 square kilometres and serves as a buffer zone between San-Pédro and the agricultural hinterland. Walking into the forest edge from the beach takes you quickly into dense vegetation with a good range of birdlife. The combination of beach, lagoon, and forest makes this one of the more interesting half-day trips from San-Pédro — take a shared taxi or motorbike-taxi from the centre.
