Festivals

There is always something going on in Kenya. Kenyan people are sociable by nature, and festivals sprout up anywhere and at any time. To keep up on concerts, sports tournaments, and events, the Daily Nation newspaper is the best local source.

International Camel Derby — Maralal (July)

The most entertaining possible way to spend a weekend in northern Kenya. The Derby is held every July in Maralal, a town in the traditional homelands of the Samburu — close relatives of the Maasai, but noticeably better dressed. The race is based at the Yare Club and Campground outside town, where you can camp cheaply or get a room. There is an amateur competition open to anyone who wants to ride — for a few thousand shillings you pick a camel, hire a handler to run behind it with a stick, and take your chances. Every camel is ornery. Many sit down mid-race. You will lose. You will not mind.

Nairobi Restaurant Week (October)

An increasingly popular event in which restaurants across the city offer set menus at reduced prices. A good time to eat well in Nairobi without the usual expense of the top-end places.

Lamu Cultural Festival (November)

Held annually on Lamu island, this three-day festival celebrates Swahili culture with dhow races, donkey races, poetry, henna competitions, and traditional food. The island gets busy but the festival is genuinely community-driven rather than put on for tourists. One of the best things happening on the Kenyan coast.

Koroga Festival — Nairobi (various dates)

An outdoor music festival in Nairobi focused on Afro-fusion, Afrobeats, and jazz. Held several times a year at Safari Park Hotel grounds. Well-organized, good food and drink on site, strong lineup of Kenyan and international artists.

Madaraka Day (June 1)

Kenya's national holiday marking the day in 1963 when the country achieved internal self-rule. Marked with public celebrations in Nairobi and other cities. Not a big tourist event, but if you happen to be there it gives a sense of the country's history.

Jamhuri Day (December 12)

Independence Day — Kenya became fully independent in 1963. Marked with parades, flags, and a generally festive atmosphere. The largest celebrations are in Nairobi.
