Sleeping Warrior

The Sleeping Warrior — known locally as Eburru — is the extinct volcano that gives Elmenteita its dramatic southern backdrop. Seen from the lake, its long ridge does indeed resemble a reclining figure, and the silhouette dominates every view across the water.

The slopes are still steaming in places: small fumaroles release jets of vapour from cracks in the volcanic rock, and locals harvest condensed water from rigged-up bamboo collectors. Walking trips to the summit and the steam vents can be arranged through the lodges around the lake; the climb takes about three hours and the views over the Rift from the top are exceptional.
