City Market

Downtown Nairobi's main crafts market, packed with carvings, beadwork, and textiles in a covered colonial building

The City Market on Muindi Mbingu Street is the most accessible place in Nairobi to buy crafts and souvenirs. The covered building — erected in the colonial era as a produce market — now holds stall after stall of Maasai beadwork, soapstone carvings, batik fabrics, kikoi textiles, wooden animal carvings, and leather goods from across Kenya.

The vendors are persistent and experienced negotiators. Prices start high and move substantially with patience; expect to pay roughly half the opening price if you are willing to walk away. The quality varies between stalls, so browse widely before committing. The upper floor specialises in clothing and tailoring.

The market is in the heart of the CBD, walking distance from Parliament House and the Kenyatta International Conference Centre. It is safe during business hours; stay alert to your belongings in the crowded ground floor.
