Uhuru Park

Central Nairobi's main public park, with a lake, paddle boats, and views of the skyline

Uhuru Park — "Freedom Park" in Swahili — is a wide open green space in the heart of Nairobi, bordering the CBD to the east and Nairobi Hill to the west. It is one of the city's most used public spaces: families and office workers come here at weekends and lunch hours, and it hosts political rallies, religious gatherings, and public celebrations throughout the year.

A small artificial lake at the centre can be explored by paddle boat. The park's elevated sections offer some of the better views of the downtown skyline. The adjacent Central Park connects Uhuru Park to the City Square area.

The park is a focal point in Kenyan political history. In the early 1990s, activists including Wangari Maathai led resistance here against a proposed government development on the park's grounds — a campaign that helped galvanise Kenya's pro-democracy movement. The park remains a symbolic public space. It is safe during the day but avoid it after dark.
