The park is not a Big Five destination but the lower slopes shelter zebra, eland, hartebeest, gazelle, baboon and the occasional giraffe. Buffalo and leopard live in the crater forest; both are uncommon on the rim trail but rangers will sometimes know about a recent sighting.
The bird list is good — augur buzzards over the rim, mountain wagtails on the lower slopes, sunbirds in the acacias near the gate. Bring binoculars; the open landscape rewards them.
