Portuguese Chapel

Tiny 16th-century chapel in Malindi, often cited as East Africa's oldest surviving Christian church.

The Portuguese Chapel is one of Malindi's most evocative historical scraps: a small whitewashed church linked to the early Portuguese presence on the Swahili coast. National Museums of Kenya describes it as the oldest Christian church in East Africa, and it was gazetted as a monument in 1935.

The scale is tiny, so do not expect a grand church. Its value is in the setting, the graveyard, and the way it anchors Malindi's Vasco da Gama story in an actual building rather than a plaque or a viewpoint.
