Beaches

Watamu beach is one of the more attractive stretches of sand on the Kenyan coast: wide, white, and sheltered by a headland that keeps the water calm in Turtle Bay. The northern end near the village is the most accessible to independent travellers; the southern stretch is largely fronted by resort hotels, which can make access awkward. At low tide you can walk out across the exposed coral flats — watch where you step.

The beach is at its best between October and March. From April through June the long rains arrive and the sea can turn rough and murky. The southeast monsoon picks up July to September, bringing choppier conditions but also pushing down the humidity.
