Turtle Bay Beach

Turtle Bay is the sheltered northern end of Watamu's beach, named for the green and hawksbill turtles that feed on the seagrass beds just offshore. The bay is protected by a natural headland that keeps the water calmer than the open coast, and it is the preferred swimming spot for independent travellers staying in the village.

At low tide the exposed coral flats are fascinating to explore on foot — just watch where you step. Dhow trips to the marine reserve depart from the beach, and local fishermen pull their boats up here in the early morning. It has none of the resort infrastructure of the southern stretch, which makes it considerably more pleasant.
