Chagaik Arboretum

Quiet arboretum and dam ten kilometres east of town

A peaceful collection of indigenous and exotic trees set above a small dam on the Nakuru road, about ten kilometres east of Kericho. The grounds are open to walkers and the path down to the water is shaded for most of its length. Look out for colobus monkeys in the higher branches and a good range of forest birds — turacos, sunbirds, the occasional Ross's turaco.

The arboretum is on private tea-estate land but is freely accessible during daylight. There are no signposted trails, just a network of dirt tracks. Bring water and something to sit on if you plan to picnic by the dam — there are no facilities. The drive out from Kericho takes you through some of the most photogenic tea country in Kenya.

A story
The arboretum was planted in the 1960s by the tea companies on what is now Unilever-owned land, partly as a buffer for the Chagaik dam that supplies water to the surrounding estates. The collection of indigenous and introduced trees has matured into a genuine forest, and the dam at the bottom holds tilapia that locals fish at weekends.
