Kericho Tea Hotel

Colonial-era hotel surrounded by tea fields and gardens

The Tea Hotel sits a short walk south of the town centre on a low rise above the road, its long single-storey wings spreading out into mature gardens. Even if you are not staying, it is worth a stop for a pot of tea on the lawn or a walk through the grounds, where jacarandas and flame trees frame views back over the plantations.

The building has seen better days but retains an unmistakeable colonial atmosphere — high-ceilinged dining room, dark-wood bar, faded photographs of the tea industry's early years. Tour operators in town use it as the standard pick-up point for plantation visits, and it is one of the few places where you can reliably arrange a guided walk through a working estate.

A story
Built by Brooke Bond in the 1950s for its visiting executives and tea-tasters, the hotel was for decades the only place in town with a swimming pool and a proper bar. It changed hands repeatedly after independence and the gardens are now better maintained than the rooms, but it is still the local landmark.
