Isecheno Forest Station

The Kenya Forest Service station and the deepest walking routes into the forest

The Isecheno station, on the southern edge of the Kakamega forest, is the Kenya Forest Service's main entry point and the starting point for the most rewarding longer walks into the forest. The routes here are denser and quieter than from Buyangu — fewer day trippers, more chance of seeing the shy de Brazza's monkeys, deeper passages through old-growth canopy.

Guides at the station can take you on routes of two, four, or six hours, with stops at the largest mahogany trees in the reserve, at the elephant pool, and at a small clearing where blue monkeys often forage in the morning. The Forest Service runs a few basic bandas (cabins) at the station and a campground; these are cheap and rustic, and are where naturalists tend to stay. Beware: there is no bank or proper shop on this side of the forest, so bring everything you need from town.
